Does time ever get away from you so much so that you think to yourself, "I need to put up that post from (blank)...where the hell were we?" Yeah, that's what it's been like of late. I had to seriously sit and think about where it was our last vacation took us and it was just over a week ago. This Summer into Autumn adjustment is always a crazy one and I have to say, my least favorite though we are coming into my most favorite time of year. Anyway, when I finally had a moment to sit and think I did recall where we were and enough about it to put it on page.
Wildcat Mountain State Park is located in Ontario, WI, in the drift-less region of Wisconsin between Wisconsin Dells and the Mississippi River valley. This is Amish country, hills and valley country, and what my husband and I have decided is an area we are constantly drawn to for so many reasons.
This was our first visit to this park mostly because we have become spoiled glampers who have decided that electricity is one of the luxuries we really like having. We do have a solar hookup that the husband put together this year but we've yet to try it. Good intentions will have to wait until next camping season as this was our last of this year. With that said, we did get the handicap site which happened to have electricity. Good thing because we did require a teeny amount of heat the first two nights and we really don't like to use propane when we're asleep. Frankly we don't like propane at all but it is a necessity sometimes.
The entry to the park is a bit daunting as it's a rather steep climb with roadsides that have you looking almost straight down in spots. I wasn't as concerned about the entry as I was about keeping things on the slow down, while towing a heavy camper out of there. Thankfully my husband is a master at such things when he chooses to tame his daredevil child and put on his adult hat.
This was a gorgeous, well kept park. You could see it's age creeping in but the bathrooms were mostly clean and the staff friendly. It's a small park used mostly for kayakers and hikers and horse trail enthusiasts. The sites are large, wide open and grassy. It's easy to combine a group even if you each have your own trailers. Some area's are more open than others but all are mostly nice sites. This includes the cart in sites. There are several and all were used the weekend we spent there.
We loved the fact that the nights are dark and the sky is wide open to you. We happened to be on a new moon moving toward the thin crescent and the moon set early but sadly we just missed another aurora storm. It took place in our latitudes for two days prior. We saw nothing more than a few shooting stars and the gorgeous milky way. That is enough for us though.
We spent a few hours one day traveling up the hills and down into the valleys along the Amish farm homesteads, stopping to pick up bakery and look at their wares. We enjoyed the quiet of the farms, the animals we saw along the way and the serenity of the area. Truth be told we love the idea of the simple life but it ain't so simple!
