One of our Autumn traditions is a color run of some sort. Since the travel trailer has already been stored for the winter this year's color run consisted of a road trip with friends to the Door County area. This is located about 3 hours to the north, in the eastern part of the state, what is sometimes called the thumb of Wisconsin's mitten shape. It consists of dozens of small towns, countless artisans, and hundreds of family businesses each with their own unique flavor. You will not find any fast food franchises N. of Sturgeon Bay which tells you a little bit about the unique flavor of the area.
Much of the day was less than ideal. There was a cold swirling wind, mist and occasional hard rain to battle. While it was not great for hiking or hanging outdoors it was not a bad day for a long car ride and experiencing a small town Oktoberfest between rain drops.
The colors proved quite vivid despite the lack of sun all day. We stopped for lunch, to admire the scenery and to pick up some smoked fish. (While smoked fish is available in the grocery stores of the big city, the small family run shops in the tiny towns all around the great lakes are the best places, in our opinion, to find the real deal, the best tasting smoked fish around.)
Of course we never miss the opportunity of basking in the glory of the setting autumn sun which, night after night proves an absolutely beautiful site whether from the car or my own backyard. There are no filters or special tweaking done to any of my photos. This is exactly what we saw as experienced it. For me it is breathtaking every single time I experience it!
While I doubt this will be the only color run we make this season as the color is still a couple weeks out from peaking in our own area, we've begun to prepare for the long winter months. The gardens are being planted with garlic and onion which winter beautifully and supply us with an early summer harvest. Our food has already turned toward the comfort of autumn in both smells (I made pumpkin ginger bread yesterday) and the taste of low, slow cooked dinners (soups and stews are on the menu weekly) while the calendar is focused on social events surrounding hockey and football games.
