After spending about a week in
Iron Mountain, Michigan we drove across gorgeous Hwy 2 to Iron River, Wisconsin. Where we selected a second privately owned campground called
Top O the Morn. This campground was located on beautiful Iron Lake, it's well worn but kept up and clean. A very typical lake campground as I remember from my childhood camping years. While the site we had was not the kind we prefer, it worked best for us. This park is a wonderful family owned, family atmosphere, lake campground. They offered indoor rest rooms with a single shower stall and outdoor "family" style showers which worked for us perfectly. It's probably the first time we've ever actually paid to shower so the $.50 cent cost for 3 minutes was a bit of a surprise but I can understand why it was what it was. My husband bragged to me that he managed to shower both he and our son on 3 minutes, I told him to stop being a cheep skate and pay the buck to relax a little! It was a bit of a joke for us because really, what's a dollar to feel clean while camping!

The owners were delightful people and we loved that they had their kids involved in doing some of the chores earning money to put away in a college fun or to use later in life. Great life lessons. After talking to the owners we found out that it has been a life long dream of theirs to own a campground. I admire that they followed their dream and took on the task of making it happen. The husband and I have spoken about doing this for years but never managed to take the leap. Kudos to them! We also spent a bit of time talking to their middle daughter who explained to us how to measure trees for age. She was a smart and personable young lady. We learned a lot from her and really enjoyed the conversation.

We were two for two on this trip in choosing accommodations. We loved listening to the loon call in the twilight of eve and the abundance of ruby throat hummingbirds that visited the feeder during the day. The only regret we had was that we didn't bring along any of our fishing gear and this would have been a wonderful place to spend some of our relaxing days on this beautiful lake with a pole in the water.
Instead of pole in water on a boat we spent one of our days checking out
Amnicon Falls State Park. This is not a park we would typically camp for a weeks time at with their lack of showers and electricity but we have heard of it's beautiful river and waterfalls so we wanted to see it for ourselves. We knew right away we'd been here before but it was nothing short of peaceful a second time around and we enjoyed spending the day by the water.
Our purpose for staying in Iron River was to attend the
Tall Ships Festival in
Duluth, Minnesota. It was an hours driving distance but was the closest
place we could find with a vacancy at the time we were looking to
reserve. More about that in the third and final entry.
